Professor of Dermatology University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine San Francisco, California John Koo, MD, is Professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Dr. Koo received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was a Harvard National Scholar. He completed an internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of California at Los Angeles and subsequently served as chief resident in psychiatry. He also completed a residency in dermatology at UCSF Medical Center. Board certified in both psychiatry and dermatology, he is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Koo has authored or coauthored more than 300 peer reviewed articles and books published in journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and other journals. Currently, Dr. Koo is founding editor of Journal of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis. Dr. Koo has been listed in Best Doctors in America continuously for several decades. He is the recipient of 2014 American Skin Association (ASA) Annual Research Award, Best Speaker Award at Fall Clinical Symposium and Best Mentor Award at his home institution of UCSF Medical Center. Lastly, he is the 3rd recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award by National Psoriasis Foundation. Dr. Koo serves as a medical advisory board member for the National Psoriasis Foundation and chairs the Psoriasis Expert Resource Group (PERG), a joint task force of the American Academy of Dermatology and the National Psoriasis Foundation. He is a founding member of the Association for Psychocutaneous Medicine of North America. With his extensive knowledge and expertise, Dr. Koo is frequently invited to lecture at national and international conferences. Lastly, in the 2022 Newsweek survey of thousands of dermatologists across USA, Dr. Koo was voted as the 7th most prominent medical dermatologist out of almost 20,000 dermatologists in the entire USA. Dr. Koo is one of the three editors for a peer review journal published by the National Psoriasis Foundation called Psoriasis Forum and distributed to approximately 3,000 professional members (i.e., Dermatologists) of the National Psoriasis Foundation. Along with Mark Lebwohl, M.D. and Alice Gottlieb M.D, Dr. Koo reviews and edits all the submissions to this journal. In addition, Dr. Koo is one of the most frequent contributors to the content of this journal. Dr. Koo is also a member of Presidents Council which is the core group who not only contributes financially to the National Psoriasis Foundation but help with fundraising for this organization. For the past 7 years and for the foreseeable future, he is the Chairman of the Psoriasis Expert Resource Group (PERG) which is the main psoriasis task force of both the American Academy of Dermatology and National Psoriasis Foundation. Psoriasis Expert Resource Group encourages input from the American Academy of Dermatology members (i.e., practitioners who are prominent in the care of psoriasis patients in their region) and communicates key issues to both AAD and NPF. Dr. Koo is also the founding member of the Association for Psychocutaneous Disorders of North America which is the first American organization devoted to educating dermatologists and other professionals about the importance of properly managing psychodermatology cases. Dr. Koo was the first and the founding chairman of the AAD task force on psychocutaneous disease. After 4 years of service, he rotated out of this chairmanship 1 year ago as per AAD guidelines. However, he regularly contributes to the educational effort to enhance clinical competence of dermatologists regarding management of psychodermatology cases at AAD Annual Meetings. TEACHING SERVICE: 2006-current 1,090 total hours of teaching (including preparation) Formal class or course teaching hours: 75 hours Informal teaching hours: 1,000 hours Mentoring hours: 40 hours Dr. Koo is regularly involved with the teaching of medical students, fellows and residents. UCSF Psoriasis Treatment Center and Phototherapy Unit is officially an elective for UCSF medical students and medical students from other institutions. The official title of this elective is “Phototherapy and Psoriasis Therapy” and the elective number is Derm 140.06. He routinely has anywhere from 3-6 medical students rotating through the unit to learn phototherapy, clinical research, psoriasis therapy, Goeckerman therapy, etc. In addition, there are 2 full-time fellows who are training with Dr. Koo. Currently and for the past two decades years, Dr. Koo also taught on the average 4 medical students who spent 1 year with him full time and this trend is expected to continue. Dr. Koo currently has 2 full time students, both from UCSF and other medical schools, working with him full time for 1 year each. UCSF dermatology residents spend 2-3 half days per week training with Dr. Koo. In addition, Dr. Koo attends Resident’s Clinic every Tuesday afternoon and interacts with them in other capacities such as participation in the fellow and residency mentorship, etc. Dr. Koo is one of the most sought-after speakers in the dermatology community, both by academic institutions and by community-based dermatologists. Last year (2012), he won 1st place in speaker competition at the Fall Clinical Symposium in Las Vegas which is one of the most popular dermatology CME events outside of Annual American Academy of Dermatology Meeting. He is a regular speaker at the American Academy of Dermatology’s main academy meetings and summer sessions, Hawaii Dermatology Society, etc. The lists of engagements are numerous and can be found in his C.V. Because he is always interacting with medical students and fellows during the working hour, the total hours spent annually for the academic year in teaching activities could be more than 1,000 hours. All his practice time involves teaching medical students and/or fellows at the same time he sees patients. If he is not in town, he is usually teaching elsewhere as a visiting professor. What Are the Developments in Psychodermatology and Psychopharmacology with Regard to Delusional Patients? Cutis. 2020, Oct This is the most up to date review of clinically relevant topics in psychodermatology and progress in psychopharmacology regarding the management of delusional patients which is one of the most difficult clinical challenges in dermatology. 7. Chan S, Koo J, 2020. Is Morgellons an Organic Disease? Structural and Functional Abnormalities Implicated in the Pathophysiology of Delusional Infestation. Dermatology Online Journal. Aug 2020. This is about the only publication currently available in medical literature from the USA which reviews the neuropathology of delusions of parasitosis/Morgellons disease. Most dermatologists in the USA, both providers and academicians are unware of the fact that there are growing data supporting the presence of structural, organic brain pathologies which has been associated with Morgellons disease. 8. Koo J, Ho RS, Thibodeaux Q. Depression and suicidality in psoriasis and clinical studies of brodalumab: a narrative review. Cutis. 2019 Dec;104(6):361-365. PMID: 31939925. Brodalumab is one of the most efficacious biologic agents available. However, this very useful medication is currently very much under-utilized because of depression/suicide warning based on four cases of suicide out of more than 6,000 research subjects. This review goes into detail on each of these four cases as well as evaluating the overall psychological improvement documented with Brodalumab to question the scientific validity of the depression/suicide FDA warning that scares many clinicians and patients from benefiting from this medication. 9. Myers, B., Reddy, V., Chan, S., Thibodeaux, Q., Brownstone, N., Koo. J. Optimizing doxepin therapy in dermatology: introducing blood level monitoring and genotype testing. Journal of Dermatological Treatment. 2020, May; Cited in PubMed; PMID: 32347140. Pub Status: Published. This is the most up to date and comprehensive review of doxepin which is the most efficacious anti itch agent available in dermatology. Even though doxepin is widely used by dermatologists, most providers are unaware of the fact that optimal doses for anti-itch effect varies tremendously between individuals. Moreover, most dermatologists are also not aware of availability of doxepin blood level determination which can be very helpful in optimizing the dose instead of erroneously giving up on doxepin as a “treatment failure”. This is particularly important because for many patients with distressing itch or hives may not have another option if they fail doxepin since doxepin is used as the treatment of last resort.
